Personal Bible Study including Journaling
We will teach you how to connect with God through His Word. One key tool we use is Journaling. Our goal is for you to have a hunger for God’s Word and become a self-feeder.
Personal Guides to help show the way
Every Journey Group has Guides who are on The Journey with you. They are not teachers or counselors, but rather, facilitators to help point you in the right direction and to monitor your progress.
Retreats
We incorporate 3 different retreats where you will spend extended time away with your group and with the Lord. These are usually on a Saturday. All of these are designed to help you carve out more time for intimacy with The Father.
What is unique about The Journey?
First, we try not to use the word study or program to describe The Journey. We feel that those would be inaccurate representations. It is not a concentrated Bible study, but rather a discovery process from the Bible. In this process of discovery and spiritual foundation building, we chart a path that directs us toward our ultimate target of having an intimate, abiding relationship with Christ, which in turn will bear fruit to His glory. Yes, we will study the Bible, for our spiritual foundation will be built from truths found in God's Word. Since we believe that "All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, correction and instruction in righteousness," we believe that we must find our clear and final truth in God's Word.
We also believe that God has given wisdom, insight, and truth in other creative works. Some of these commentaries and literature help the 21st century man to understand how profoundly relevant God's Word and His leadership is to them in our day and time. We also believe that some of these resources can help us toward our goal of growing closer to Christ. For this reason we encourage reading and research in some of these resources in order to gain deeper insights and clarity of understanding of what Scripture says. We challenge our participants to share these insights at our meetings.
However, we also have an important rule that all of these discoveries must pass through the grid of Scripture and align with it. Our spiritual foundation must be built on theology, not philosophy. As a result of this process, a dedicated effort in studying the Bible becomes an integral part of The Journey.
The Difference
We do not disciple. Rather, Journey is a discipleship process under The Holy Spirit where discovery, removal of hindrances, and growth occurs. We believe our primary objective is not to lead a person to study about God, but rather to walk with them as we use foundational, biblical truths that help lead to an intimate, abiding relationship with Christ. For this reason we view The Journey to be a personal progression into intimacy with Jesus Christ, rather than merely an intellectual study about Him. This is why we use the word journey to describe the process.
What is true discipleship? Traditional forms of mentoring and discipling emphasize a disciplined commitment to verse memorization, evangelism, and/or a rigid schedule of daily devotions. We believe that these are all good tools, and if used consistently, provide a strong biblical foundation for the participant. Unfortunately, for many of the participants, after the training ends the accountability to continue this regimen wanes. Why is this? Although the discipline and the tools are good, life change is not consistent for many of the participants. We believe this happens primarily because there is typically a horizontal accountability emphasized within the traditional approach rather than a vertical one. As a result, the heart of the participant has not been captured for Christ.
We have a strong conviction that the heart must change first before Christian disciplines can have a chance to function optimally in that person. Because of this, we have made it the primary objective of The Journey to move the participant to where heart change can really occur; an abiding, intimate relationship with Christ.
We feel that as abiding occurs, the outward disciplines will joyfully follow; then these disciplines mentioned can become a true lifestyle. The true inward transformation and outward manifestation, called the fruit of the Spirit will be a natural occurrence when we abide with Christ. We feel that the fruit of the Spirit is the supernatural expression of the Holy Spirit in us and through us, and it is this fruit that impacts our world around us. However, this fruit cannot occur in us unless the necessary connection of abiding in Christ is established
What about the Great Commission? We believe that God desires that all His children join Him in the Great Commission. But we also believe that we must first connect with Him on a deep, intimate level of heart connection so that our spiritual gifts can be enabled. When this connection and enablement happens, we become kingdom harvesters who can make our own unique contribution to the Great Commission. Without the foundation of a personally transformed lite, our contribution to the Great Commission will be highly limited. We need to labor in His power and strength. In our own strength we can provide for God only what man can produce. However, the influence that can change our world is produced only from an abiding relationship with Christ.
Please understand, we do not feel our approach is the only path for a deeper intimacy with Christ. However, the points referenced above should assist in understanding the contrasting differences in the approach The Journey uses.
