-shel·ter- with a capital "S"

I woke up this morning with one word on my mind: "shelter". I couldn't figure out why I would wake up to a word, but it was there. After I got out of bed and started my morning routine, the word stuck in my brain. It simply would not go away. Just like one of those songs that you can't get of your mind and it plays over and over again. So, I went and got my Bible and proceeded to look up scripture relating to the word "shelter". I found Psalm 91. This piece of scripture is one of the most powerful and reassuring psalms I have ever read. It was a blessing to read this morning.

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” Psalm 91

After reading the chapter and being taken back by its encouragement I decided to look up the word “shelter” ; Defined as something beneath, behind, or within which a person, animal, or thing is protected from storms, missiles, adverse conditions, etc.; refuge. Shelter noun - refuge/Shelter verb - protect

Think about this: something beneath, behind, or within which a person is protected. I believe God's presence covers all those directions. The first part of the psalm says this: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High”. As men of God, this is where we might be limiting our potential in experiencing Psalm 91 to its fullest. The limitation may have to do with understanding what it means to dwell in the shelter. It simply means this: we are to abide in God. Are we to abide in God and run to our Shelter in times of trouble? No, we are to dwell; we are to remain in the shelter at all times. Not only are we to continually live in the Shelter, but our minds are to dwell and meditate also on His words day and night.  Our dwelling in the Shelter and our relationship with God are two of the same. If you desire to witness firsthand God's command of His army of angels to guard you in all your ways and lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone, so that you will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. “Because he loves me,” says the Lord. Then this is what you must do, in first person.

“ Do not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but delight  in the law of the Lord, and meditate on his law day and night. You will be like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and your leaves will not wither— whatever you do prospers.” Psa 1:1-3

Well, the word I received this morning wasn't just one word; it was an unopened gift that carried a message. I could have simply ignored it and dismissed it for many things, but instead, the Spirit provoked my spirit to dwell on it. I know the Spirit is doing the same with you, my brothers in Jesus. I urge you to pay attention not only in hearing but also in responding to what God is showing you. Live it by sharing it!
