i:60 Tumult Heart

i:60 - Tumult Heart

Emotions are not a measure of your faith.

“I  groan because of the tumult of my heart.”

There is a man in the Bible named David. His story is one of an underdog rising from a shepherd to a king of a great nation. What makes David different from other men in the Bible is his honesty with God and his authenticity as a man who loved God. David's entire life, including the good, the messy, the embarrassing, and his emotional vulnerabilities , it’s all there for us to read!  David shares these intimate moments with us, exposing the man he was through his psalms and personal stories, which is a gift to us. David was a man after God's own heart; God himself said this about David, and despite David's many failures and a rollercoaster of emotions, God showed mercy and grace to him. God anointed David to become the King of Israel and to lead and counsel God's children. Unlike the king before him, David pointed the people to God, not to himself. When he realized he had betrayed God, David would fall to his knees, ask for forgiveness, and then wait on God. David was not interested in advancing his own kingdom but rather advancing the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven. The story of David is a must-read, and his psalms are a daily go-to as you continue your journey with Jesus. David's story shows that you are not much different from him on your journey. I want to share one of his psalms, Psalm 38, which stands out to me because of the way it addresses sin and troubles in our lives and the effects of not being right with God. Pay special attention to how David describes himself in his moments of anguish in verses 1-14. Have you experienced this type of suffering in your life? David did too. Now look at verse 15, which is what David was best known for. It's not easy, and our emotions are not always aligned with our faith in God, but this does not define our love and faith in God. We are human, and God knows that. Don't allow your emotions to dictate and shame you into thinking you're not trusting God. Our amazing Father is not only there to help us with the situation we are in but also to help us with the emotions that come along with that situation. Think of it this way: the wound is healing, but we need something to relieve the pain. As you wait on God, find pain relief in His words and simply talk to Him. There's a prescription for every hour or possibly every 24 hours, but no matter what, the pharmacy is always open.

Psalm 38- “O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath! For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has come down on me. There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin. For my iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me. My wounds stink and fester because of my foolishness, I am utterly bowed down and prostrate; all the day I go about mourning. For my sides are filled with burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh. I am feeble and crushed; I groan because of the tumult of my heart. O Lord, all my longing is before you; my sighing is not hidden from you. My heart throbs; my strength fails me, and the light of my eyes—it also has gone from me. My friends and companions stand aloof from my plague, and my nearest kin stand far off. Those who seek my life lay their snares; those who seek my hurt speak of ruin and meditate treachery all day long. But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear, like a mute man who does not open his mouth. I have become like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth are no rebukes. But for you, O Lord, do I wait; it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer. For I said, “Only let them not rejoice over me, who boast against me when my foot slips!” For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever before me. I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin. But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty, and many are those who hate me wrongfully. Those who render me evil for good accuse me because I follow after good. Do not forsake me, O Lord! O my God, be not far from me! Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation!”
