And I lift my voice
To worship You
Oh my soul rejoice
Take joy my King
In what You hear
Let it be a sweet, sweet sound
In Your ear
OUR DAILY INFLUENCE- Please read Psalm 40 every morning this week
Monday Morning - read Psalm 40
Verses 1-5 “I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord. Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie! You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.
Examine Ourselves: The above scripture is actually a testimony of praise. David is rejoicing in being rescued by God. He reminds us that we must be patient in God’s timing. Waiting on the Lord is difficult, but in doing so, there will be no doubt in who has rescued us. Then David says this: “He has put a new song in my mouth.” Not a bitter song, but a song of praise! In this praise, David will give his testimony to all who will hear. In the last part of this piece, he also writes this in regard to praise: “I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.” In other words, our mouths should be in continuous praise of what God can do. What new song has God given you this morning? Write it down and keep a list. For every morning this week, write a new one and see what God can do.
Be Reminded Today; Your song should not stop with you, but tell all who are around you today how good your Heavenly Father is. Do not only tell, but demonstrate it in the way you handle the situations you encounter with others. People have come to Christ by merely watching how He works in others.
Word of the day: GRACE
Tuesday Morning- read Psalm 40
Verses 6-8 In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required. Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me: I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”Examine Ourselves; I thought God wanted sacrifices and offerings? The answer is yes, but David reminds us that God is not interested in the motions or lip service. God wants authenticity. He wants a person with a contrite heart whose sacrifices and offerings are genuine, one who loves God's laws, knows them, and carries them out with joy. Do you look forward to carrying out God's will? Read Matthew 6:33 and Romans 12:1-2, or the whole chapter if you're bold enough.
Be Reminded Today; Pay attention today to how you love people and how you will fail at loving others. This evening, examine yourself, ask God to search your heart, and ask Him for forgiveness and help. Then, try again.
Word of the day: AUTHENTICITY
Wednesday Morning- read Psalm 40
Verses 9-11 I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O Lord. I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation. As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain your mercy from me; your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me!
Examining Ourselves;
God knows we are a needy people. As soon as we praise God, we turn around and find that we need His help again, petitioning Him once more. David reminds himself and God of the promises God has made to those who follow, proclaim, and share His faithfulness to the nation. The above verses are a prelude to David's petition for help in the following verses. In what ways have you praised God this week? Have you been an effective witness for Jesus?
Be Reminded Today; Be intentional in pointing others to Christ. Engage in conversations and allow the Spirit to guide you to those conversations and through them.
Word of the day: WITNESS
Thursday Morning- read Psalm 40
Verses 12-15 For evils have encompassed me beyond number; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head; my heart fails me. Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me! O Lord, make haste to help me! Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether who seek to snatch away my life; let those be turned back and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt! Let those be appalled because of their shame who say to me, “Aha, Aha!”Examining Ourselves: Overwhelmed would be an understatement. David is very poetic in describing his troubles. There are two types of troubles David is describing in these verses: the sins he has brought on himself (my iniquities have overtaken me) and the sins of his enemies in their desire to kill David and discredit him (who seek to snatch away my life). (Aha!) Take a moment and look at your iniquities. Identify the externals and the eternals; this will give you wisdom when you ask God for help in those areas.
Be Reminded Today; Be highly conscious of your sin today; you might find it surprising how they are presented. Be wise as a serpent and gentle as a dove in identifying your external enemies. Matthew 10:16
Word of the day: DISCERNMENT
Friday Morning- read Psalm 40
Verse 16-17 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your
salvation say continually, “Great is the Lord!” As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes
thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God!”
Examining Ourselves: This is a great way to end the week. David ends his psalm with a blessing to his brothers and sisters, then quickly humbles himself in the reminder of his position in comparison to God (I am poor and needy), and without hesitation desperately asks God for immediate help. Humility is a characteristic that is teachable. Ask yourself, are you humble? Then, to test the answer, ask yourself, are you teachable, and what has God taught you this week?
Be Reminded Today; If you are a talker, be a listener. If you're a listener, be a talker. If you're a doer, be an observer; if you're an observer, be a doer. You can be taught differently in all those ways.
Word of the day: TEACHABLE
