The Song

The Song

Nothing can move us more than a song. Even the most callus person can break down from just a simple word or phrase in a song. Throughout history, songs  have started movements, encouraged the desperate, and brought joy to a fainting heart. There are times when we'll hear a tune and it brings back memories from long ago. Some are sad, some joyful, some bring a calm peace. There are times that I'll hear a song and I can almost remember the smell in the air during the time of that particular memory that the song brings with it. But songs never remain solely in the past; new songs have a way of introducing themselves into our lives and again become a memory, adding to our cumulative collection of moments in our lives. For me, I'm not gifted in the talent of creating music, but I love songs for this reason: they unlock something  deep within me. what is unlocked and released is unexplainable; my eyes start to water and I feel exposed and vulnerable, but from sadness or joy, rather an overwhelming flood of all that I've kept buried deep that I couldn't or wouldn't express outwardly. I don't think this is an accident in our genetics. I believe the Master Designer created a default mechanism in our DNA. Not only did He design our hearts to unlock our deepest feelings when we hear a song, but also to let it all out through singing those songs. Songs are the testimonies of our lives - the ones we hear that are created by others we relate to, or the song is attached to a memory that we ourselves cannot personally express, and then there are songs that we ourselves create every day through the testimonies of our daily lives. This verse sums up the last statement that was written.

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Col 3:15-20

Songs are often use to manipulate our emotions. But a song led by the Spirit, will be catalyst causing self-reflection on God's grace, overwhelming and inspiring us to extend that same grace to others. Genuine, unexplainable emotions that point to a surrendering life in Christ those type of emotions are Spirit-led; anything less is a fleeting experience. As we continue to surrender to Christ and follow His lead, we will be able to discern what comes from the Spirit and what's counterfeit.

“speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Eph 5:19,20

"The life you live is “The Song” and that song is the greatest gift you can give back to God."
